Once upon a Nice Guy...
On March, 20, 2005 I was cat sitting for my sister.
Her cat Lilly was very pregnant. The father cat was a grey tomcat with black tabby stripes. Anyways, as luck would have it the kittens were born that night while my sister was out of the house and I delivered the kittens. It was pretty scary, mostly for the mother cat who tried to run for a moment when she had her first kitten. I made a comfy spot for her and she had 4 kittens. |
One of the last born was a black and white kitten who came out of his mother feet first with the birth sack still around him. Once my sister was home it was decided that I would get the little kitten who was born backwards!
From a young age he enjoyed running down the hallway in an attempt to trip the human on the way to the bathroom. A tradition which still is kept today. It is a race to the counter top where he springs up and stands directly in front of the sink. This is where he gets petted most.
He viciously climbs the couch and leaves many claw holes in the fabric! Nice Guy has the strangest way of playing, first he comes charging at the toy and pounces it but then he turns tail and runs away as fast as he can. As soon as he "gets out of sight from his prey" he lays low to the ground and sneaks up on it. Like most cats, he knows just the right time to come and visit you is when you are trying to draw or read a book. He sits RIGHT on top of whatever you are doing and demands you amuse him. If you would try to pick Nice Guy up and cuddle him he would usually demand to be put down, sometimes even giving you a MEAN bite. He only wanted to be petted when he came to you, and even then it wasn't a sure thing. |
He just never seemed to be around when you wanted to pet him most. He had a talent for being JUST out of reach or asleep somewhere, worn out from his daily stampeding and hunting routine.
His attitude was so strange, he was never a feral cat -- Why so rough?
Perhaps growing up without siblings to show him how it felt to be bit made him more aggressive? Who knows...
I had never met a kitten who was so against being held or petted before, so it took some getting used to.
He wasn't shy at all about asserting himself and would always tell me when I should leave him alone or was too close for his comfort.

Now that we have lived together for 9 years I've learned what he doesn't like, and what he really loves...
and playing with toys, of course!
Cuddle time is great when Nice Guy allows it!
